From Marissa to Everyone

Hello Everyone,
I want to thank each and every one of you for writing me, praying for me or even thinking of me in your heart and are continuing to do so.  For the most part, I’m hanging in there, as well as one could in this environment.  Prison is definitely NOT what’s happening.  It’s dreadful here, but hey, it’s suppose to be, it is after all captivity.  My good days out weigh my bad days only because God is my source of strength.  Please know that you all inspire me thru your communication and please know that the prayers that you offer up on my behalf are being answered.  I’m so very blessed to have some of the most extraordinary people and organizations who are committed to supporting and encouraging me in every way.
I will continue to believe in our justice system.  I choose to do so because I have complete trust in God, and we are still a nation that has this fundamental belief embedded in our core, displayed in our courtrooms and written on our money, and more hopefully in our hearts.
Truly I couldn’t begin to express to you how much I appreciate your wonderful letters of encouragement.  Please know that I do not take your time and kindness for granted.  Your heart-felt concern I am most grateful for.
With all sincerity & respect,
Marissa Alexander

  4. Ms Alexander: I just heard of your case today and I am CONFUSED. Maybe you can enlighten me. Here is my understanding of your case: You fired a gun in your home and received a 20 year prison sentence. Is that correct? Abusive husband or not, intruder or not, if I fire a gun in my home in Florida, do I get 20 years?
I hope you can lift the curtains on this for me, because I am definitely in the dark.

    1. Where did the justice system go wrong. How is it ok to follow a child and gun him down in cold blood and then have a big corporation pay for your defense and get off free because of the color of your victims skin? Perhaps had Marrisa been white she could have used the stand your ground defense like Zimmerman did. It shouldn't make a difference in the color of your skin but unfortunately it apparently does. How come a battered black lady with a history of being abused is sitting in prison and a white man who followed a black child and gunned him down in cold blood is walking the street a free man. Apparently there is no justice in Florida at least if your skin is black.

    2. First, it is irresponsible and misleading to continue to refer to Trayvon Martin as a child. To do so is to deliberately distort the facts to unnecessarily inflame passions and incite people to violence.

The facts are Trayvon was a 6 foot, 160 pound, marijuana smoking young adult only 11 months from being a legal adult.

    2. I am believing God that she is going to get out! Meanwhile, I am going to write Marissa and keep interceding on her behalf. This could have been me, as a victim of domestic violence protecting herself and her kids. I'm appauld that the father got custody. He should be in jail, he obviously fought her when she was pregant also. He admitted to beating all his baby mama's. Trust God and have faith!

  8. After hearing the verdict tonight in the zimmerman Martin case I'm deeply disturbed by yours. I am willing to support your cause completely as I find it appauling the amount of jail time you received. However could you please answer one question for me in your own words, why did you choose to shoot the gun inside where the kids were? Thank you marissa. I will do what I can to support your cause

    1. It seems obvious to me, that her life and safety and the safety of her children were all at great immediate risk. Isn't that the whole point of "stand your ground" type laws? You are at serious risk in your own home, so you can defend yourself? It isn't (in my mind anyway) so much "stand your ground" if you get the intruder (related top you or not, the person who threatens you and your family can be considered an intruder)outside and then shoot them in the back when they are fleeing!

  10. Ms Alexander,
There seems to be a great deal of interest in the miscarriage of justice that you have endured lately, in no small part due to recent events. I wrote a comment to the NRA on their Facebook page yesterday after hearing about your case:
I'm a strong defender of our 2ND Amendment, and a Life Member of the NRA, but I haven't heard anything about the NRA coming to the defense of this young Mother in Florida who was sentenced to 20 years for firing a warning shot to defend herself. Why is that? This certainly sounds like a great miscarriage of Justice and an infringement of her right to defend herself.

    I received this reply:
We can't insert ourselves into legal cases, but individuals may contact us for support.
Did you ever ask them for support? Would you or your legal representative ask them now, especially if you are appealing your sentence? Has the Governor, State Legislators, or current Senators or Representatives of the State of Florida ever been contacted on your behalf?
Wishing you a better life than the one you have been dealt so far,
    George Geier

  14. Marissa, you have the right to defend yourself and your family. I am outraged that a jury would think otherwise. You are a tough lady. God bless you.

  15. Its a shame i can see if she shot him. I can relate to her shooting. Why didnt the do nothing eith his abusive as. There is no justice for women being abusd they tell u to get a protection order when that order really does nothing it dont save ya life.they need to put more laws to help protect battered woman.what r u suppose to do when u scared for ya life n the system has failed u.

  17. You have a good soul and if this country has any care for those who have been abused they will set you free and put that man in jail. They should also suspend the judge that said you should have just exited through a window, as if you weren't scared for your life. I hope you get the justice you deserve.

  18. She will be set free. She has to be. Is there a petition that everyone can sign?

  26. This is why our justice system is so racist and unfair. There is nothing justifiable in what they have done to this women. If she were a white female she wouldn't be sitting in jail; they would be applauding her for not becoming another murder victim!

  27. May God bless you and give you strength to keep fighting the injustice to you and your family!
